Very firstly i would like to welcome you all to our Bushcraft and Survival Blog and Site. Its really great you are here and i cant wait to share my own skills and knowledge with anybody whos willing to take the time to learn. Il introduce myself, my names Dan lake and ive been studying Bushcraft and Survival for around 10 years.

I Grew up in the countryside of Kent UK surrounded by fields and woodland and as an only child with one neighbour i spent a hell of a lot of time on my own outside, mostly making camps, trying to start fires and getting better daily with a catapult shooting at things i probably shouldnt have been shooting at. I didn't know back then i was practicing Bushcraft and Survival skills i just always found it cool. I had a collection of knifes and primitive weapons like bows and slings and making things extended into my adult life as i became a very hands on person making the tools i needed out of anything i could find mostly, most of the time on a budget.

Around 18 years old i moved out into the surrounding town area and i lost my way in the outdoors until around 10 years ago when i realised that busy places, ques and traffic just was not for me anymore. Long story short i re-kindled my love for nature and found Bushcraft and Survival for the first time and here it begins.

I have an ability to hyperfocus - i have suspected autistic spectrum disorder and im waiting for a likely diagnosis which now explains why i find it hard to deal with busy places, loud enviroments and get easily overwhelmed by modern life which can be very distressing.

But it also allows me to concentrate on subjects totally blinkered by anything going on around me, i think they call that obsession. Maybe OCD I dont know exactly but its something i possess as both a gift and a curse.

So… i became obsessed with bushcraft and survival skills. I watched, read and learnt everything i could get my hands on and went out to practice these skills regularly, i found it easy as i had always worked with my hands and was used to applying logic and common sense to tasks and once i had learnt the properties and uses of the plants, trees and materials around me i became pretty good at it pretty quickly without blowing my own trumpet, i became very imaginative with it and solved provlems with my own ideas and found better ways to do lots of tasks.

I can confidently natural shelter build to the point of near total waterproofing, start fire with a variety of means including primitive methods, build long lasting and self feeding fires that don't burn to the ground. I can carve a variety of objects to a good decorated standard, i know how to collect and filter water in a variety of ways including naturally made filters and locate safe drinking water.

These are just some of things ive learnt and practiced over the years without going into too much detail. I have also lived outside for a few months combined on two separate occasions in a woodland environment, once in winter for 6 weeks so i know exactly what it takes to keep warm, hydrated and sheltered and all the other parts of wilderness living which is too large a subject to go into right now.

Ive hunted, killed, gutted, skinned a variety of birds and small game. Ive fleshed deer and tanned hides and made items from hides, including gloves and hats and sleeping bags. I have a great understanding of the type of kit you will need to make your Bushcraft or Survival practice as comfortable as possible. And can camp using very minimal equipment. Here is a picture of one of my set ups in winter in the UK, in this pic i have a fleshing beam, a large raised fire-pit thats ft off the floor a kitchen area with tables, a bushcraft ladder to put the huge tarp up on my own which now collects drinking water, a 5m bell tent with a DD 3x3 as a porch and a tine bath i used to heat up large amounts of water on.

Bushcraft camp
I lived here for 6 weeks in winter whilst suffering from severe mental health. Il never forget that little trip haha but as always nature heals. Unless it kills you obviously lol.
